KMB Ceramics (ABN 23 974 435 232) is a small family company which has been in business since 1996. It trades as "KMB Hobby Ceramics" on the Internet, and as "KMB Ceramics & Craft" in Goulburn, NSW. The owner, and main craft teacher, Kylie Brooke became enthralled with the hobby of ceramics in 1994 and obtained her teacher certification in 1996. She subsequently opened a studio on her property in Londenderry, NSW, with the help of her immediate family and her mother, Mavis Winrow, who subsequently gained her teacher certification in 2001. From time to time, Kylie and Mavis also sold ceramics at some local monthly markets and in Canberra and Wollongong. The business expanded considerably from 1999 when they took a regular weekend stall at the very large Parklea Markets in Western Sydney. There they sold a wide range of ceramic bisque items, especially in the form of rice paper découpage "kits" which proved, for many people, a simple but satisfying introduction to the wide field of Hobby Ceramics. Because of the lack of other craft stalls at the Markets, and a steady demand, KMB Ceramics began to sell a range of other art supplies including wooden items for folk art. The company also began supplying the kits by mail-order, often to those who had sampled the craft but could not easily visit the markets on a regular basis. The company continued at Parklea Markets until January 2005, but the mail-order business still continues. Several years ago Kylie and family moved to Windellama, near Goulburn in the Southern Highlands of NSW. A plan was soon formulated to open a studio and craft shop in Goulburn as soon as her two children were in High School there. Thus KMB Ceramics & Craft opened its doors in Goulburn in November 2005. In February 2009, the decision was taken to move to smaller premises in Goulburn. more details. Over those years, both Kylie and Mavis have become very active in the Ceramic Art Association of NSW (CAA-NSW), and are both currently serving on its management committee. Kylie has also earned certification as a Judge of Ceramic Art and has been used in that capacity at the last three Annual Ceramic Art Shows which the CAA-NSW has organised. They have also helped run the CAA's stand and ceramic workshops at the Stitches and Craft Show held twice a year in Sydney, (although from 2008 this Show seems to have dropped to one per year). This is done with the broad aim of increasing people's awareness of their beloved Hobby and hopefully helping to boost the business of the CAA's members across NSW. Kylie says "I can see real benefit in people entering their pieces in competitions such as the Annual Ceramic Art Show. I will continue to really encourage my students and clients to submit their work and I know many will have the joy of winning a ribbon or a more significant award!" |
