Ceramics is one of a number of crafts called “pottery” as a group. This group involves using clay of various types porcelain is the finest clay, and ceramic is the next finest. The clays are worked in various ways in the case of ceramics it is usually done as “slip-casting” namely having the clay in a liquid form and pouring it in a mould of the object to be made. Ceramics is one of the most popular and oldest of hobbies. For over a thousand years ceramic and porcelain pieces have been produced in one form or another. With Hobby Ceramics your choices are limited only by your imagination. At KMB we have over 1000 moulds all of which can be altered or adapted at the Greenware stage into 1000’s of more creations. We have a Mail Order Catalogue which contains about 440 of these items that are in stock and can be purchased over the phone, or by email, if you cannot visit our Studio/Shop in Goulburn. Our ceramics classes run for 3 hours, starting at whatever time is convenient for you between the hours of 9.30 am to 1pm (this allows you to utilise your full 3 hours before we close at 4pm) and, from February 2006, from 6pm Tuesday to Thursday. The cost to you is $7.50 for the session. This includes use of our friendly staff’s expertise and, if you wish, the use of our Ceramic Tools and Brushes. Then there is the cost of the Greenware or Bisque piece that you choose, any Firings it may need, and any Class Colour used. A total cost example for a hand-painted dinner plate would be Greenware $6.00, 2 x firing $6.00 and class colour $3.00 giving you a total of $15.00. With the exclusion of firing most students would complete this project within the 3 hour class. We recommend that total beginners in ceramics undertake a structured Beginners Course. This course is designed to teach you about greenware, firing, bisque, underglazes, glazes, acrylics, rice paper, and an introduction to overglazes. The course consists of 5 x 3 hour sessions, one per week. The cost is $140.00 for the instruction and completion of 5 pieces (all of which are on display in the studio). This price includes everything you do not incur any additional costs. For those of you with some experience and who may want to become more accomplished ceramists, we can take you through many techniques including majolica, water etch, sgraffito, clay carve, cutout, greenware adaption, overglaze and mosaics, as well as the use of a wide range of products. From time to time we will also invite guest teachers to attend our studio and teach us about the latest techniques and products on the market. These seminars will usually take place on a Saturday and include the product used (but not the actual piece) and lunch. Prices for such seminars will vary and will be listed at the time that bookings are being taken. |
